Give Claude a word or sentence count and mean it

Left to its own devices, Claude will produce outputs that are longer than most sales use cases need. A follow-up email that should be 80 words becomes 200. A CRM note that should be 4 bullet points becomes 12.

The fix is simple: specify the length upfront and be specific.

Length constraints that work

  • "Under 80 words" — for short cold emails and follow-ups
  • "Exactly 3 bullet points" — for CRM entries or status updates
  • "One sentence" — for subject lines or opening hooks
  • "Under 300 words" — for executive summaries
  • "5 items, each under 15 words" — for talking points

Why tight length constraints improve quality

When Claude knows it has 80 words, it has to make every word count. Filler phrases get cut. Redundant sentences get eliminated. The result is a tighter, more direct output that's actually usable in the format you intended.

What happens without them

Without length constraints, Claude tends to over-explain, add caveats, and include more context than you need. In sales communication, longer is almost never better. Specify the length every time.
