Context is Everything: How to Brief Your AI Before Every Session

The most common reason AI output disappoints sales reps isn't the tool — it's the context gap. You asked for a cold email without telling the AI what you sell, who you're targeting, or why you're reaching out. It produced something generic because you gave it nothing specific to work with.

Every AI session starts from zero unless you bring the context yourself. That means before asking for any output, you need to front-load three things: what you sell (one tight paragraph), who you're targeting (title, company size, industry), and why you're reaching out right now (the specific trigger or moment).

The difference in output quality between a context-free prompt and a fully briefed one is not marginal. It's the difference between output that reads like a template and output you can send without editing.

What to include in your context block every time:

  • Your product or service in one to two sentences — what it does and who it's for
  • Your ICP: company size, industry, and the title of your ideal buyer
  • Your primary differentiators — what makes you different from the obvious alternative
  • The specific account and contact you're working on right now
  • Any trigger event, company news, or discovery insight that's relevant

The shortcut: use Claude Projects. Store your company overview, ICP definition, value props, and top case studies in a Claude Project. Every session then starts fully loaded. You stop re-explaining yourself and start producing usable output from the first prompt.

Context isn't just a nice-to-have. It's the mechanism by which AI becomes genuinely useful in sales instead of a fancy autocomplete.
