Break complex prompts into numbered steps

For complex sales tasks — building an executive summary, analyzing a pipeline, preparing for a negotiation — breaking the task into explicit steps within a single prompt often produces dramatically better results than asking for everything at once.

The numbered step approach

Instead of: "Write an executive summary for a proposal to [COMPANY]."

Write: "Complete these steps in order:

  1. Summarize the business problem they're trying to solve in their language
  2. State the expected outcome using their own metrics
  3. Explain why our solution is the right fit in 2 sentences
  4. State why now is the right time
  5. Recommend the next step

Present as a single executive summary. Under 300 words. Board-level tone."

Why it works

The numbered steps tell Claude exactly what to include and in what order. Without them, Claude chooses its own structure — which may not match the structure a CFO would find most persuasive. With them, Claude follows your exact blueprint.

Apply to any complex task

This works for: MEDDIC analysis, objection response development, stakeholder maps, negotiation position builds, and any output where both the content and structure matter.
