Ask for Step-by-Step Reasoning on Complex Analysis

One of the most powerful prompt techniques is asking the AI to think step-by-step before giving you its output. This is especially effective for complex analysis tasks like MEDDPICC scoring, competitive positioning, or deal risk assessment.

Without step-by-step reasoning, the AI jumps to conclusions based on surface-level pattern matching. With it, the model works through the logic systematically, which produces more accurate analysis and catches edge cases it would otherwise miss.

How to trigger step-by-step reasoning:

  • Add "Think through this step by step before responding" to your prompt
  • Use "First, analyze [X]. Then, based on that analysis, produce [Y]."
  • Break your prompt into explicit numbered stages
  • For scoring prompts, ask for reasoning before the score: "Explain your assessment of each MEDDIC element before assigning a rating."

This is particularly valuable for:

  • Deal health assessments where you want the reasoning, not just the score
  • Competitive analysis where nuance matters
  • Objection handling where context determines the right response
  • Any output where you'll be questioned about your logic in a meeting

The output is longer, but the quality is significantly higher for analytical tasks. For writing tasks like cold emails, step-by-step reasoning is usually unnecessary.
