Verified September 2, 2026: both products can search the current web and cite sources. Perplexity offers Search, Pro Search, and Research. ChatGPT offers Search for faster lookups and Deep Research for multi-source work across the public web, uploaded files, selected sites, and enabled apps. The older claim that ChatGPT only reasons from training data is inaccurate when its research tools are enabled.
Perplexity is built around a search-first experience and is a natural default for exploring current company news, filings, executive changes, competitor information, and unfamiliar topics. ChatGPT Search can also retrieve current information with citations. For either tool, open the source, check the date, and verify that it supports the exact claim.
Perplexity Research can conduct iterative searches and synthesize a longer report. ChatGPT Deep Research can plan and synthesize complex work using the web, uploaded files, specific sites, and enabled apps. Which is better depends on the sources you need, the controls available on your plan, and where your approved account context already lives.
Both products can analyze and create written outputs. Do not choose on a blanket “research tool versus writing tool” rule. Choose the environment that can preserve the evidence chain while producing the actual deliverable: an account brief, executive POV, discovery plan, competitive analysis, or outreach draft.
Require a source ledger with claim, URL or file, publication date, exact support, and evidence status. Separate facts from inferences, assumptions, unknowns, and recommendations. Ask for contradictory sources and alternative explanations. Treat citations as paths to verify, not as an accuracy guarantee.
Perplexity is a strong research-first default. ChatGPT combines quick Search and deeper research with broader file and app context when enabled. Either can support sales research; the defensible choice is the one that fits the source set, approved data boundary, and final seller job.
