Google Meet Limits Auto Note-Taking to 3+ Person Meetings on September 29 — On by Default for Business Plans

From September 29 a new Meet setting runs automatic notes only on meetings with three or more people. It is on by default for Business Standard and Plus.

Why this matters for sellers

A great many sales calls have exactly two people on them. First discovery with a single champion, the follow-up with the economic buyer, the renewal check-in — two people, camera on, and until now a set of automatic notes waiting in your inbox afterwards. If your admin picks the new three-or-more option, those calls stop producing automatic notes, and on Business Standard and Business Plus that option is on by default from September 29 without anyone choosing it. The failure mode is quiet: you finish a discovery call assuming the transcript is being written, and it is not. Check the setting this week rather than finding out on a call that matters.

In plain English

"Take notes for me" is the Gemini feature in Google Meet that writes up a meeting for you and drops the document in your calendar entry and inbox. Until now an administrator had two choices for the whole company: on for every meeting, or off for every meeting. The third choice is a participant threshold — run it only when at least three people are in the room. "ON by default" for Business Standard and Business Plus means the threshold is applied for you unless someone changes it; "OFF by default" for the Enterprise and Frontline Plus tiers means those companies keep whatever behaviour they have today unless an admin opts in. Google also says users can override the admin's default in their own Meet settings after September 29. Separately, the notes document now opens on a short Quick notes summary instead of the full write-up, with the full version one tab away.

The short version: on some Google plans your two-person sales calls stop getting automatic notes on September 29 unless you turn the setting back on yourself.

Google published a change to Google Meet's "Take notes for me" on September 22, 2026. In Google's words: "Previously, admins could only enable or disable automatic note-taking for all meetings. We're now rolling out a third option, which will allow admins to enable automatic note-taking only for meetings with three or more people." Individuals get the same control: "We're also introducing a way for end users to enable note-taking only for meetings with three or more participants." A second post the same day adds Quick notes, "a high-level overview of main takeaways from your meetings," which becomes the default tab in the notes document and the default summary in the meeting notification email.

Announced: September 22, 2026.

Availability: Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Google states the default split directly: "Customers on Business Standard and Business Plus plans will see this setting turned ON by default on; the setting will be OFF by default for customers on Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Frontline Plus plans, as well as those with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on."

Price: Not stated; included with the editions listed.

Regions: Not stated.

What it doesn't do: The post does not say what happens to automatic notes on a one-to-one call beyond the plain meaning of the setting, and it does not mention manual note-taking at all. "These settings will begin to take effect September 29th" on an "extended rollout (potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility)," so the date is a start, not a finish line. Nothing here changes note quality, and nothing writes to a CRM.

What it means for you

SDR — Your qualification calls are the most exposed, because almost all of them are one prospect and you. Open Meet settings this week and set your own preference rather than inheriting the admin default, then take one deliberately manual note on your next two-person call as a fallback. Do not let the first missing transcript be one where the prospect named a budget.

AE — The three-person threshold quietly rewards multi-threading: the calls that keep producing automatic notes are the ones with a second stakeholder on them. That is an accident of a settings change rather than a reason to add people, but if you have been meaning to pull a second name onto the next call, the note trail is now one more argument. Also check whether Quick notes, which is the new default view, carries enough detail for your CRM update or whether you need the full tab.

Manager — Ask your admin one question before September 29: which of the three options are we on, and did we choose it. On Business Standard and Business Plus the answer may be that nobody chose anything. If your coaching depends on reading discovery notes, a silent switch to three-or-more removes most first calls from your review queue, and you will notice it as reps suddenly having less to show.

RevOps — This is a data-completeness change dressed as a privacy setting, and it arrives on a rollout Google describes as "potentially longer than 15 days," so behaviour may differ between reps for weeks. If anything downstream reads Meet notes — a CRM sync, an enablement review, a call-coverage metric — expect a drop in one-to-one coverage from late September and decide now whether that is the intended posture or an accident. Set the admin option deliberately and document the choice.

What to run

If automatic notes stop on your two-person calls, the recovery is a post-call synthesis prompt that turns whatever you did scribble into a structured, CRM-ready summary. Have one saved and tested before September 29, not after the call you needed it for.
