ChatGPT now runs in a Word sidebar on every plan, including Free. Proposals, SOWs and RFP responses get an editor that revises selected text in place.
The document is where the deal gets written down, and until now the assistant lived in another tab. Every proposal, SOW, RFP response and security questionnaire you have pasted into a chat window and pasted back came with a formatting tax and a version nobody could trace. Revising selected text in place removes that round trip, and with it your best excuse: the first draft stops being the hard part. What distinguishes you afterwards is judgement about what the buyer actually needs to read, which sentence to cut, which number you can defend, and which risk to name yourself before procurement finds it.
An add-in is a small application that runs inside Word itself rather than in a browser tab. You install it once from Microsoft Marketplace and it appears as a sidebar beside your document.
Token limits are the usage ceiling on your ChatGPT plan. Tokens are roughly chunks of words, and every request you make inside Word counts against the same allowance as your chats. OpenAI says Word "draws from the shared usage allowance for Codex and other premium features on plans that include it", which means heavy document work and heavy Codex work compete for one budget on the plans that meter both.
The short version: ChatGPT now sits in a panel inside Word on every plan including Free, it edits your document directly instead of handing you text to paste, and it spends the same allowance your chats do.
OpenAI added ChatGPT to Microsoft Word on September 17, 2026. From a sidebar inside the document, ChatGPT can "draft from notes, summarize a document, revise selected text, and adjust headings and formatting." Word joins Excel and PowerPoint through the same Microsoft add-in.
Announced: September 17, 2026, in OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes.
Availability: "available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free." Install the ChatGPT add-in from Microsoft Marketplace, open ChatGPT in Word, and sign in.
Price: No separate charge stated. "Your plan's token limits apply, and Word draws from the shared usage allowance for Codex and other premium features on plans that include it."
Regions: Not stated.
What it doesn't do: The release note does not say the Word sidebar reaches your CRM, your connected plugins, or your ChatGPT Library files from inside the document, and it describes no admin controls for Business or Enterprise tenants. It says nothing about tracked changes or comments, the two mechanics a proposal in legal review actually runs on. Platform coverage is not itemized either; Word is described only as joining Excel and PowerPoint through the same add-in.
SDR — Least affected of the four, because your output is email and call notes rather than documents. The one install worth making is for the handoff: turn a messy page of discovery notes into a one-page account summary your AE will actually read before the call.
AE — This is your feature. Open a proposal you already won, select the executive summary, and ask for a version written for the economic buyer instead of your champion. Judge the tool on that single edit before you point it at a live deal.
Manager — A team drafting proposals in place will produce them faster and more uniformly, which makes weak deal logic harder to spot rather than easier. Polished prose has always been the best disguise for a deal with no business case. Review the discovery behind the document, not the document.
RevOps — Two questions before you bless it. Whether your tenant permits add-ins from Microsoft Marketplace at all, which is a Microsoft 365 admin decision rather than an OpenAI one. And what your retention and data-loss policy says about a sidebar that reads whole contracts: the release note describes no admin controls, so assume you have to ask.
Prove the revision pass on a deal you have already closed before you trust it on one you have not. Open a proposal that won, select the sections a buyer actually reads, and ask for the cut that removes everything about you. The proposal and demo prompts in Solution Framing, Demo & Proposal are written for exactly that pass.
