HOLD 2026-09-28: NEVER PUBLISHED (lastPublished null, live URL 404s). Earlier ledgers wrongly call this 'published 08-28' — that is the SOURCE date. Now two expansions stale: OpenAI's 8/31 self-service Ads Manager (40+ countries) and 9/23 SE Asia + Taiwan (60+ countries). Rewrite to the current 60+ footprint or drop. Do not publish as-is.
Your European prospects on free plans are now seeing vendor placements while they scope the problem you sell into. You cannot buy your way into every one of those conversations, but you can find out what the assistant says about your category unprompted. Most reps have never checked.
Conversion optimization means the ad system bids toward an outcome you define, such as a signup, rather than toward clicks. A pixel is a small tracking snippet on your site that reports those outcomes back to the ad platform.
ChatGPT Ads expanded to 31 European countries this week, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria. OpenAI announced the move on August 18 for the following week, making it the largest ad expansion since the U.S. pilot began in February.
Access runs through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency partners and technology partners first, with self-service through Ads Manager arriving later in the summer. Ads appear only for people on Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free. Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
OpenAI states that conversations stay private from advertisers, that ads are labeled and kept separate from answers, and that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. The platform has added conversion optimization alongside CPM and CPC bidding, plus geo-targeting, custom audiences, and measurement through the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API.
For sellers, the significance is not the ad unit. It is confirmation that assistant conversations are a commercial surface where buyers compare options. OpenAI describes the moment plainly: people arrive explaining what they want to accomplish and what constraints they face, then explore and evaluate. That is a discovery call happening without you in the room, increasingly with a competitor's placement beside it.
AEs in EMEA: Expect buyers to arrive with a shortlist assembled inside an assistant. Ask which alternatives they have already seen and where they saw them.
SDRs: Category language is being set somewhere you do not control. Read what the assistant says about your space before writing this quarter's sequences.
Sales leaders: Worth a direct conversation with marketing about whether your category appears here at all.
Everyone: Paid and organic assistant visibility are now separate problems. Do not assume marketing owns both.
Open ChatGPT on a free account and ask it, as a buyer would, to recommend tools in your category with the constraints your best customer has. Write down which vendors appear, in what order, and what the assistant claims each one is good at. Repeat once a quarter.
Two minutes, once a week. What changed in AI, and what to run because of it.
